Sciences Po-ASN 2008 Conference “Empires & Nations”
can now be downloaded here
The Conference, organized by SciencesPo (the Institut
d’Etudes Politiques de Paris) and the Association for
the Study of Nationalities (ASN) on July
3-5, 2008, is taking place in the Sciences Po building,
27, rue Saint-Guillaume, Paris
75006, near the famed Boulevard Saint-Germain.
There are no registration
fees, although people interested in attending the event
are invited to contact the Conference
organizers by providing their name, institutional
affiliation and email, in order to receive updated information
prior to the Conference.
The Conference will bring together more than 200
scholars from nearly 40 states and includes a large proportion
of presenters currently based in Central
Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, Eurasia, and China.

The Joint Sciences Po-ASN Conference, the second
ASN academic gathering organized in Paris in the last few years,
will feature a number of special panels
on the theme of Empires, including
“Nationalism and Empires”, “The Concept and
Practice of Empire,” “The EU as a Substitute for
Empire,” “Empire, Nation, and Film,” and “The
French Empire.” Bertrand Badie, Jane Burbank, Dominic
Lieven, Olivier Roy, Jacques Rupnik, and Valery Tishkov will
be among the guest panelists. Mark Beissinger, of Princeton
University, will deliver the keynote address.
The Conference will feature a strong lineup of a dozen
panels dealing with the Russian historical and geographical
zone, including “Local Politics and Imperial Projects,”
“The Politics of Empire and Mass Deportations,”
“Language Policy and Resistance in the Russian/Soviet
Era,” and “The North Caucasus: Russia’s Troubled
Frontier.” Panels in the extensive Eurasian section include
“The Chinese Nation at the Crossroads,” “Islam
under Soviet and Russian Rule,” and “Politics, Memories
and Official Histories in Central Asia.” Several
panels will also be devoted to the Ottoman Empire, the
Greek-Turkish exchange of population, imperial legacies in Croatia
and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, on Romania, Hungary, the Roma under
Three Empires, and many
more.
Since 2005, the Annual World ASN Convention at
Columbia University, New York, has acknowledged excellence in
graduate studies research by offering Awards for Best Doctoral
Papers in several sections. The SciencesPo-ASN 2008 Conference
on “Empires and Nations” will maintain this tradition
and the winner will be announced at the closing reception.
