The Conference, organized by SciencesPo (the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris) and the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN) on July 3-5, 2008, is taking place in the Sciences Po building, 27, rue Saint-Guillaume, Paris 75006, near the famed Boulevard Saint-Germain.

There are no registration fees, although people interested in attending the event are invited to contact the Conference organizers by providing their name, institutional affiliation and email, in order to receive updated information prior to the Conference.

The Conference will bring together more than 200 scholars from nearly 40 states and includes a large proportion of presenters currently based in Central Europe, the Balkans, the former Soviet Union, Eurasia, and China. Thirty-five panelists benefited from travel grants made possible by the financial support of the Région Ile-de-France and several other sponsors > More about the sponsors

The Joint Sciences Po-ASN Conference, the second ASN academic gathering organized in Paris in the last few years, will feature a number of special panels on the theme of Empires, including “Nationalism and Empires”, “The Concept and Practice of Empire,” “The EU as a Substitute for Empire,” “Empire, Nation, and Film,” and “The French Empire.” Bertrand Badie, Jane Burbank, Dominic Lieven, Olivier Roy, Jacques Rupnik, and Valery Tishkov will be among the guest panelists. Mark Beissinger, of Princeton University, will deliver the keynote address.

The Conference will feature a strong lineup of a dozen panels dealing with the Russian historical and geographical zone, including “Local Politics and Imperial Projects,” “The Politics of Empire and Mass Deportations,” “Language Policy and Resistance in the Russian/Soviet Era,” and “The North Caucasus: Russia’s Troubled Frontier.” Panels in the extensive Eurasian section include “The Chinese Nation at the Crossroads,” “Islam under Soviet and Russian Rule,” and “Politics, Memories and Official Histories in Central Asia.” Several panels will also be devoted to the Ottoman Empire, the Greek-Turkish exchange of population, imperial legacies in Croatia and in Bosnia-Herzegovina, on Romania, Hungary, the Roma under Three Empires, and many more.

Since 2005, the Annual World ASN Convention at Columbia University, New York, has acknowledged excellence in graduate studies research by offering Awards for Best Doctoral Papers in several sections. The SciencesPo-ASN 2008 Conference on “Empires and Nations” will maintain this tradition and the winner will be announced at the closing reception.

We look forward to seeing you at the Conference!
